Many people from all over the world just love to fish. The rise in popularity of recreational boating, fishing and/or playing on the water has given rise to crafts that support the industry at prices anyone can afford.

kayak_11What may be even more valuable to a fisherman than his rod and reel is the vessel he is fishing in. For those who like to be on the water, a number of different boats are available to choose from. When you go out to buy a boat for yourself or your family, make sure that you assess your fishing needs.

The boat that is used is important to the sport and they come in different styles and each has their own special features. Each person who is an avid fisherman has their favorite boat to fish in, and each one is different. Pelican’s fishing boats are unique and are great for any type of fishing.

WaterStates Trading Company offers Pelican’s Jon Boats, Pontoons, Canoes, Kayaks, and Paddle Boats that are fun to run and play with.. Best of all they can be pulled behind virtually any car with a standard bumper hitch.

Over the years changes in the boat building industry have been evident. Technology has evolved and therefore, the tried and tested methods are modified or discarded. Those who have been in the industry for a while now, have been fortunate to see the old methods and as well as the new methods at work. Some experiments succeed while most of them fail and this because of the kind of material used to build the boat.

RAM-X is a multi-layer material exclusive to Pelican. It is known for its high impact-resistance, its ability to regain its initial shape after a violent impact and its UV-protected exterior finish. RAM-X has become the benchmark of quality in the industry.

XcelCore is the ideal material for canoes, where durability is key. Incredibly rigid RAM-X layers sandwich a low-density closed cell core. Not only does the closed cell core resist impacts, it increases buoyancy, insulates from cold water and reduces noise and vibration.

It may very well be that small fishing boats are the kind of boat that you are looking for. They are just about perfect for any fishing recreational fishing situation.

Fall Is Best For Walleye Fishing

The good old days of fishing with  a stick, some string and a worm are a cherished part of American tradition.  Today, there are all kinds of fishing gear choices.  The question is: How to catch an 8 pound walleye when other fishermen in the same area are not catching anything. Bait, weather, and time of year all make a difference.

IMG_1799Walleyes are Freshwater fish means they live in waters that are generally considered to contain fresh water, with minimal or no salt content. It’s one of the more versatile types of fish.

We know that fishing for walleye in the middle of summer is not going to be easy. Temperatures in the 70s and 80s everyday with not much wind and lots of sun. Great weather if you wanted to get a tan, but not too good for Walleye fishing.  Fall the best time of year for fishing for Walleyes.  Fall Walleyes call for Larger Lures and Slower Retrieval.

Fall/Early Morning:  Fish aren’t biting much from sunup to early morning. The water is cool because the sun is too low to penetrate the water.

Fall/Late Morning-Noon:  Fish are biting off and on in warmer, shallow water. The water is generally cool due to the season.

Fall/Afternoon-Early Evening:  Fishing is excellent. Sun is directly overhead for several hours and the water gets more comfortable near the surface. This makes for seasonally good fishing because fish are putting on weight for the winter. Look for bait schools where bigger fish are more likely to be.

Variable Weather Conditions have a large affect on your fishing success.

Wind can play a large role in fishing success. Wind pushes water and surface food to the far shore, with bait fish behind it, and with game fish behind the bait fish. So if you’re fishing from shore on a windy day, fish where you have to cast into the wind. That way your lure moves with the wind, just like the other food in the lake at the same time. If you’re fishing from a boat, cast with the wind on a sheltered shore.

Storms and changing weather patterns affect fishing success since fish are keenly attuned to changes in barometric conditions. With many fish, feeding increases during the hours immediately before a cold front, but slows during and after a storm or front hits.

Fishing after a cold front is poor and continues to be poor for a day or two. Warm fronts cause surface water temperatures to increase, putting fish into a feeding mode. This can be particularly true in the winter, when a warming trend can cause otherwise sluggish fish to start feeding actively. Most of this feeding activity is on or near the warm surface.

Cloudy days improve fishing since the clouds prevent light penetration. Overcast skies cause fish to cruise for food more than they would during bright days when they tend to hide and stay close to structure. On overcast, cloudy days, fish are less likely to be at specific structure spots or areas and more likely to be scattered throughout a waterway.

A light rain is another good time to fish, especially a warm spring or summer rain. Rain can help you hide from the fish since the rain breaks up the view a fish has through the water surface. This is true for shore, wade or boat fishing. Rain also washes insects and bait into the water, creating a feeding binge for fish.

Hard rain conditions are a poor time to fish. A hard rain muddies the water, makes it difficult for fish to find bait or lures and causes heavy runoff, which can clog their gills. The increased water flow in rivers from any rain increases current flow and makes it difficult for fish to maintain a comfortable position in the river. High water levels can also create rapids, waves and unsafe fishing conditions.

When there’s lightning or the possibility of lightning, get out of the water immediately, whether you’re in a boat, wading or on shore. Safety first. Plus, there’s no way you’re going to catch fish in a violent storm.

Choosing the right type of bait at various times throughout the year can help you target walleyes specifically and reduce the amount of other fish that you catch!

Trolling is an effective technique for fishing scattered walleyes or to locate active fish within a school of walleyes. When trolling a new area try trolling in a lazy S pattern to cover different depths. Once you catch a fish note the depth and try a few more pass at that same depth. Be sure to use a lure that is capable of reaching the depths that you will be trolling. Trolling is best suited for larger contours such as a rip-rapped shoreline or an expansive flat versus a small sunken island or point.

Trolling speed is very important when fishing walleyes. In colder waters a very slow speed is often the most effective, while faster speeds can trigger more active fish during the summer months. In either case be sure to note and repeat your trolling speed when catching a fish.

Typically, a slow steady retrieve is best for fishing walleyes with crankbaits. But it never hurts to experiment with other retrieves to catch a few more fish out of the same spot. A stop-and-go retrieve can often trigger a strike out of a few more fish.

Match your choice of live bait to the season. Minnows are most effective during the winter, spring, and fall. In the summer time it’s hard to beat night crawlers and leeches. Leopard frogs can also be effective in the fall.

When fishing clear cold water during the winter and early spring try fishing a plain live minnow for walleyes. In this clear water a plain minnow will look very natural while also offering a slow presentation to sluggish walleyes.

When Walleye fishing with nightcrawlers:  First bring 12 dozen nightcrawlers. Start to get ready for some slow trolling. Pick out the most lively nightcrawlers and hook them up through the nose. That was very important. You want them to be lively and stretched out while you are trolling.

On a large body of water there is lots of room to fish. Picked an area in the middle of all the other fishermen and start to troll in about 20 feet of water.  You will have to fish at different depths in order to locate the walleye.

Walleye fishing with nightcrawlers can be very tricky while trolling. If you troll too fast you may lose your nightcrawler. So troll slowly and wait for something to hit.  Many times you will sit there without a bite, or so you may think. You are most likely getting bites but you just don’t know it.

You may not be feeling the bite because it’s like pulling your bait through molasses. When you feel that kind of bite then set the hook. The walleye sometimes bite so lightly you can barely distinguish when to set the hook. But when you learn the feel you will start to catch walleye.

So, when you are walleye fishing with nightcrawlers and they are hard to catch, remember to feel for the molasses bite. The walleye are biting lightly and working their way to the hook by slowing sucking in the nightcrawler, thats when you set the hook!

Fishing and Boating Safety First

Fishing and Boating go together and more people than ever are enjoying these activities.  Safe boating is the responsibility of everyone.  It is more important than ever to operate your boat in a courteous and safe manner. Exercise common courtesy when on the water. Avoid running too close to other boaters or fishermen.

Boat-lifestyle_1Most boat accidents are products of negligent actions by one or more people. According to the coast guard, boat accidents are usually caused by human error rather than by natural phenomenon.

The best way to prevent boat accidents is to be educated. Know what you can and cannot do when out in the water.  If it is offered we suggest that you take and pass a boating-safety course.

Before heading to the lake with your new boat, practice backing it in and out of your driveway or garage. When you feel you know how sharply to turn the wheel and which direction the trailer will move when you move the wheel a certain way, it’s time to put the boat in the water.

The easiest way to remember which way the trailer turns when you turn your steering wheel is to place your hand on the BOTTOM of the steering wheel. Now, wherever you want the trailer to turn, just move your hand in that direction.

Never “hot-dog” your boat. The safety of your passengers and others on the water is your responsibility. This includes operation your vessel in such as way that endangers the safety of others or the property of others.  For example;

      Weaving your boat through congested waterways;

      Jumping the wake of another boat;

      Driving close to another vessel with restricted visibility;

      Chasing or harassing wildlife or causing damage from the wake of your boat.

Make sure you and your passengers are wearing Coast Guard approved personal flotation devices (PFDs), and that all required safety equipment is on board. Choose life jackets that are appropriate for your activity. When choosing a life jacket for a child, select on the weight range that is applicable.

Although it has been said many times, a life jacket will save your life. It will keep you afloat even if you are injured, too weak to swim or even unconscious.

Watch where you’re going! You can’t keep both eyes on your flasher or graph and operate your boat in a safe manner.  To avoid collisions, appoint one person as lookout for other vessels, foreign object, swimmers or other hazards on the water. Keep a safe speed, look in all directions before turning and be extremely cautious when driving into the sun’s glare.
